This page is a framework for reaching the top band. It deliberately does not provide model A* essays, so you build the argument yourself — more material can be added here later.
Hallmarks of a Level 6 answer
- Thorough, accurate, relevant knowledge with excellent understanding.
- Grasp of the subtleties and precise demands of the question.
- Evidence and examples used judiciously — always relevant.
- A well-evidenced, fully reasoned argument reaching a substantiated, sophisticated conclusion.
How to get there
- Plan a clear thesis before you write.
- Apply the "so what?" rule to every point.
- Sustain one line of argument, testing it against the strongest counter-arguments.
- Reach a conclusion that genuinely follows from what you argued.
Common pitfalls to avoid: listing views without evaluating them; ignoring counter-arguments; a vague "both sides have strengths" conclusion; confusing thinkers; and using "Christians believe…" without specifying the tradition.
