What AO1 tests
AO1 is knowledge and understanding: accurate, detailed knowledge of views and arguments, using scholars, quotations and technical terms correctly.
Weighting. Across OCR A Level Religious Studies (H573), AO1 accounts for 40% and AO2 for 60%. AO1 is the accurate knowledge and understanding on which strong evaluation depends.
How to show strong AO1
- Explain theories accurately — don't just name them.
- Deploy named scholars and at least one quotation per topic.
- Use technical terms precisely (e.g. synderesis, agape, concupiscence, kenosis).
- Weave AO1 into the argument rather than front-loading a separate 'information dump'.
Common AO1 pitfalls
- Vague, general knowledge with no scholars.
- Confusing thinkers (e.g. Barth's exclusivism vs Rahner's inclusivism).
- Using 'Christians believe…' without specifying which tradition.
Checklist
- Two named scholars + one quotation you can deploy per topic.
- Correct technical vocabulary throughout.
- Accurate explanation, woven into the argument.
