Why the weighting changes the whole essay
In the OCR 40-mark essay, AO1 contributes 40 per cent and AO2 contributes 60 per cent. That does not mean writing forty per cent description followed by sixty per cent opinion. It means accurate knowledge must be selected and deployed in the service of analysis and evaluation. The best answer makes every paragraph do both kinds of work.
Imagine the question asks whether religious experience provides a convincing basis for belief in God. A knowledge-first plan might list William James, corporate experience, physiological explanations and Swinburne’s principles, then add a verdict at the end. A judgement-led plan begins with disputed criteria: what would make an experience evidential, when is testimony credible, and does an alternative explanation defeat a religious interpretation or merely compete with it? Scholars and examples are then chosen because they help answer those questions.
This is the crucial transition from having notes to controlling an argument. Coverage matters, but indiscriminate coverage can dilute relevance. A top-band essay is not the longest route through everything learned; it is a deliberate route through what the title requires.
Turn the title into a live dispute
Before writing, identify the proposition, the qualifier and the implied standard. In the claim that natural law is the best approach to business ethics, natural law is the proposition under review, best demands comparison, and business ethics defines the arena. The hidden standard could be consistency, protection of persons, practical outcomes or something else. If you never state a standard, best collapses into personal preference.
A useful thesis is precise, provisional and revisable. Instead of announcing complete agreement, argue that natural law supplies a stronger account of human goods than shareholder theory, but its application becomes persuasive only when secondary precepts attend to economic evidence. That thesis creates tasks for the essay. You must explain the theory, test its application, compare it with a rival and decide whether the qualification saves or weakens it.
Plan two or three major clashes rather than a procession of names. Each clash should contain a reason supporting the thesis, the strongest objection, and a response that changes the balance. If the response merely repeats the first reason, no development has occurred. Evaluation means deciding what follows from the objection: does it destroy the argument, limit its scope, or reveal a condition under which it succeeds?
Build paragraphs that move
A powerful paragraph often follows this sequence: claim, precise support, pressure, discrimination and link. First make a claim that answers the title. Then give the minimum accurate knowledge needed to establish it: a distinction, argument, text or scholar. Apply pressure through a counterexample or rival interpretation. Discriminate between the positions by naming the criterion that matters. Finally, return to the exact wording of the question.
For example, a paragraph on divine command ethics might establish that dependence on God offers objective authority. The Euthyphro-style challenge then asks whether goodness becomes arbitrary or independent of God. A sophisticated response distinguishes a crude command theory from an account grounded in God’s necessarily good nature. Evaluation follows: the revision avoids arbitrariness, but only if the coherence and knowability of divine goodness can be defended. The paragraph has moved; it has not simply alternated between agreement and disagreement.
Scholars should perform jobs. One may define a position, another expose a weakness, and a third supply a revision. Name-dropping adds little, while a well-explained unnamed argument can still be intellectually valuable. Accuracy remains essential: do not give a scholar a claim merely because it resembles the topic. If uncertain, state the argument in your own words and use only sources you can locate.
Make conclusions earn their certainty
A conclusion should answer the title at the same level of precision as the introduction, now altered by the argument. Rank the considerations rather than summarising every paragraph. Explain why one objection carries more weight, whether the judgement applies universally or only under certain conditions, and what the most serious remaining cost is.
Calibrated language helps. A theory may be internally coherent yet practically incomplete; evidentially stronger without being certain; morally attractive but dependent on a contested view of human nature. These are not evasions. They show that you can distinguish kinds of success. Avoid inventing a false compromise in which every theory is equally useful. If principles conflict, decide which has priority and justify that priority.
Timed practice should rehearse decisions, not just handwriting. Spend a short planning window fixing the thesis, criteria and clashes. During review, underline where each paragraph explicitly answers the title. If a large passage only reports material, ask what judgement it enables. Use past questions to practise transforming different command phrases into disputes, and use the essay checklist to make the process repeatable.
The 40/60 weighting rewards intellectual control. AO1 gives your judgement something real to judge; AO2 determines what that knowledge proves. When the relationship is working, the reader never reaches a separate evaluation section because the evaluation has shaped the essay from its first sentence.
